K53 study guide: prepare for your learner's licence test
Use this quick guide alongside the free interactive practice test. It covers the three areas learners need to revise: road signs, rules of the road and vehicle controls.
1. Road signs: learn the shape first
Then identify the symbol inside the sign. Study each sign with its meaning and the action it requires; use the road-sign library and flashcards to practise recognition.
2. Rules of the road: the recurring test themes
- Observation before movement: check mirrors and blind spot, signal, then manoeuvre only when it is safe.
- Right of way: at an uncontrolled crossing, slow down, look right, left and ahead, and stop if necessary. Proceed only when safe; obey signs, signals and officer instructions.
- Pedestrians: approach crossings carefully and yield as required. Never overtake at or near a pedestrian crossing.
- Speed: follow the posted limit and reduce speed for conditions, visibility, hazards and road users.
- Emergency vehicles: make space safely and give way to an emergency vehicle using its warning devices.
3. Vehicle controls: be able to explain the basics
Know the purpose of the steering wheel, pedals, gears, handbrake, mirrors, indicators, lights, wipers and demisters. The test can ask what a control does and when it should be used. Revise focused scenarios in the vehicle-controls session.
4. Build confidence with a realistic mock test
- Study signs, rules and controls in separate short sessions.
- Use drills to revisit the category that feels least certain.
- Take the 64-question mock test with the timer on.
- Review every explanation, especially incorrect answers, and retake weak sections.
